Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an intimate trails camp in the heart of South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park.

Take a walk on the wild side. You will be privileged to exclusively explore a 12 000 hectare private Mutlumuvi concession in the southern Kruger National Park on foot in ‘Big 5 territory’ that was not previously open to the public. The exclusive lodge offers two of the most unforgettable and adventuresome activities – walking safaris through the park and the option to sleep-out in tents on wooden decks. While approximately 2 million travellers per year visit the Kruger National Park, very few have the opportunity of experiencing wilderness areas that are not open to the general public let alone have the privilege of doing so on foot. Expert guides take massive pleasure in sharing this extraordinary honour with nature lovers and adventurers alike.

The camp itself is carefully positioned overlooking the Timbetene plain and active waterholes, ensuring that wildlife and animal interactions are visible from the swimming pool, lounge and dining area, not only while out on a walk.

The Kruger National Park

The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 km2 (7,523 sq mi) in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 km (220 mi) from north to south and 65 km (40 mi) from east to west. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926.

There are nine Private Concessions inside the Kruger National Park. They are exclusive-use, unfenced private concessions that are built in the best Big 5 game viewing regions inside the Park. The accommodation is exclusive luxury, and limited to a few rooms per safari lodge, offering some of the finest accommodation in Southern Africa. Guest’s experience crowd-free game viewing, in specially customized game viewing vehicles, and may also access the rest of the park should their ranger want to pursue a special sighting.

Four stylishly appointed en-suite explorer-style tents are perfectly nestled in the shade of a Knobthorn cluster in the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Far removed from civilisation, Plains Camp is well positioned for exclusivity and adventure. Experience unfettered wildlife in ‘Big 5 territory’ and then come back to a comfortable inviting bed for that well deserved rest.

Plains Camp has four comfortably furnished African explorer tents, each accommodating two persons in twin beds. The screened en-suite bathroom has a toilet, brass shower and basin with hot running water. Each suite has its own private deck with Adirondack chairs overlooking the Timbetene plain where you can relax and enjoy the African wilderness on your doorstep.

These 4 meter-high elevated wooden platforms with tents on the top level offer guests the unique opportunity to sleep out under the stars! Safari activities

Plains Camp offers a truly authentic walking safari experience.

• Big five walking safari Guests can enjoy informative bush walks for guests over the age of 12 years. Professionally trained guides cater to guests’ preferences and fitness levels pointing out animal tracks, dung, hiding spots, rare birds and sharing details about the rich cultural history of the area.
• Game Drives The last part of the afternoon walk may be a game drive to stay out after dark in an open game vehicles, which seat up to 10 guests, are driven by experienced rangers and insightful trackers.

Encounter animals in their natural habitat on their terms, knowing that your pleasure is not only not harmful to nature – with no off-road driving, harassment of animals or captivity; but that a percentage of your spend goes directly toward conservation.

Plains Camp is not only distinctive in its design – with only four East African Safari-style tents, but also in the way things are done. The manner of trail is similar to those of SANParks in that it is a proper trail with walks of up to four hours allowing one to submerse ones senses in a hands on experience, not just a mid-morning stroll after breakfast. What sets it apart is the combination of the wealth of knowledge and experience of our highly qualified trail’s guides and unique elegance of the furnishings and treasured antiques, quality of food and service and presence of a cool plunge pool in which to enjoy a cocktail overlooking the plain between walks.

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is located in the Kruger National Park, half an hour’s safari game drive from Skukuza Airport.
